Inspired by Tulum

Tulum Inspiration

I don’t know about you but right about now, I am having crazy travel fever! I’ve had so many trips planned for this year that have all been cancelled and postponed and I find myself daydreaming of all the places that I want to go to just unwind and relax at. Lately, I’ve been dreaming a lot about my trip to Tulum last year. I’ve been dreaming of the beautiful beaches, the magical cenotes, the Mayan history, the delicious cuisine, the impeccable style and overall, a time of letting your mind, soul and body get lost in a beautiful, eco conscious environment. Needless to say, I can’t wait to go back.

For this month, we decided to create a table that brought all our travel and destination dreams and vibes to life. We’ll show you how we created this dreamy setting so that you can re-create this at home too! Even though we may not be able to physically go to all the places that we’ve set out to visit this year, we can still create versions of it to experience right at home. Travel, we love you… here’s our tribute to you.

(Special thanks to our friend Olivia Marshall for capturing all the details, our friends at the Copper Rose Collection for generously sharing their space and inventory with us, Flowergirl Em for the beautiful flowers that brought life to the table, and Frances Lane for the tabletop pieces that anchored our design.)

THE INSPIRATION

For our Tulum inspired table, we channeled all the colors and textures that reminded us of Tulum. If you’ve ever been to Tulum, you know that Tulum is very design forward with an emphasis on being eco-friendly and eco-conscious. They love using natural elements and textures such as rattan, bamboo, etc. to create a vibe, and they love creating a leafy paradise in every corner (plant lovers rejoice!). They love the art of crafting from natural elements to create beautiful ceramics and beaded items such as hanging lanterns, wall art, etc. When you mix all those components together, you get a modern, bohemian vibe. We paired the natural elements and textures with a desert rose color to bring out our current feeling of the moment, which we like to call “Bohemian Rose”.

HOW TO CREATE A TULUM INSPIRED TABLE

Here are our 5 easy design tips to create a Tulum Inspired Table:

1. Use natural elements to create a modern and eco-friendly design

Locals love using elements of the earth to design their spaces. Consider incorporating natural elements such as jute, bamboo, wood and straw to create a beautiful space of your own. Don’t forget the tabletop itself provides ample opportunity for using natural elements as well! Think along the lines of ceramics, stone, terra cotta, etc. The use of natural elements will give your table and setting a bohemian, yet modern flair.

2. Add a hanging element

Hanging art and elements is key to a Tulum inspired design, not to mention it’s just a beautiful accent! It engages all the senses in a 360 degree way. We used hanging lanterns here, but feel free to hang macrame art and other beaded items for an engaging and textured (see more about it below) experience!

3. Accent the space with leafy plants

Plants and greens grow well in Tulum’s jungle climate. Because of that, you see the most beautiful display of potted plants everywhere you go. Adding them to your space and table creates a modern and soothing feel while adding interest and dimension.

4. Add texture and more texture!

Tulum is a texture paradise. Not only do the natural elements bring texture themselves, patterns and texture is a large part of their culture and artistic heritage. Don’t be afraid to add texture to the space and surroundings by way of pillows, chairs, etc. and also incorporating textures into the tabletop design by way of china/flatware/glassware. You’ll love the end result!

Design Tips

Tie a knot in your napkin to instantly add texture and a different feel to the table. Use dried floral for added texture as well! They’re evergreen and so “of the moment” right now!

5. Create comfort

Creating an environment that is comfy and “lounge-able” are key. Create an inviting ambience by putting down rugs and using poufs to create a space that people don’t want to leave!

MAKE IT EXTRA SWEET

This month, we’ve put together two, individually portioned desserts for you to try and serve with your family and friends! We share how we made individual mini cakes and frosted them to look like terra cotta and these easy mini pavlovas with seasonal fruit.

Thank you for joining us for for our Tulum Inspired Table this month. What are some of the places that you’re inspired by and dreaming of going to?
